  2. The Cider House Rules by John Irving

    Dr. Larch
    performed abortions
    While raising and
    teaching orphans
    But Homer Wells
    Faced desertion

    Homer was
    no more a virgin
    While studying
    with the surgeon
    He wouldn’t leave
    Was the assertion

    But Homer left
    Despite Melony’s pleas
    To a farm
    To harvest apple trees
    While his home
    Was taken over by trustees

    Homer found
    love at first sight
    But Wally and Candy together
    found delight
    Until Candy lay awake worried
    one night

    Finally once Wally
    went off to war
    Candy and Homer’s
    true feelings soared
    And Wally’s presumed dead
    by the air corps

    Meanwhile,
    Candy bears Homer a son
    But, it turns out
    Wally’s not done
    He’s paralyzied
So he’s chosen as Candy’s hun

    Homer’s abortion beliefs
    come into question
When a man, against his daughter,
    commits a transgression
    Homer goes back
And keeps the orphanage in session

  3. Snow falling on Cedars by David Guterson

In a courtroom, a murder trial
    Conflicting stories making noise
Kabuo sits and waits a while
He knew the victim as a boy
But now his race makes him reviled.

    Kabuo’s wife, Hatsue, testifies
Her old love, Ishmael, remembers when
She used to look into his eyes
She broke it off with just a pen
And in the war he almost dies.

Set on an island in the Pacific Northwest
    Harbors and strawberry fields abound
The entire community put to the test
For they have to find a common ground
Or resentment and anger will manifest

Upon the island a storm descends
Swift and hurling ice and snow
The cedar trees stretch and bend
    Branches white and drooping low
With this weather, the islanders must contend.

Making notes that clear Kabuo’s name
But it takes Ishmael a time that’s long
Not knowing where he stands in the game
If Ishmael decides to do what is wrong
Oh that would just be a shame.

  4. Mudbound by Hillary Jordan

    To Mississippi the family moved
    Working hard; a somber mood
House-work and field work take up the day
Florence and Hap give help along the way
Laura married Henry, but he keeps to himself
Until his brother comes back with questionable health

Jamie drinks alcohol and likes to play yahtzee
Buts bonds with Ronsel cause they both fought the Nazis
Ronsel was black, and Jamie was white
Some of the locals went looking for a fight
So they donned white robes with tall pointy hoods
And they captured poor Ronsel; this was no good

They put rope ‘round his neck and started to pull
Then Jamie burst in with his gun loaded full
Then realizing his dad was under a mask
His family connections complicated the task
He was overpowered and knocked out cold
They tied him down for being so bold

When he came to, a tough choice must be made
They asked Jamie where Ronsel would be maimed
“His eyes. His tongue. Or his balls” they said
Jamie was scared, and he filled with dread
    Reluctantly he made his choice
And poor Ronsel lost his voice

When Florence found out what they had done to her son
She was distraught; and started to run
Over to where the old man was asleep
When she arrived she started to weep
Looking down his old grizzled face
She suffocated him with his own pillowcase

  5. Sleepers By Lorenzo Carcaterra

    Michael, the thoughtful leader
    John, the cheerful teaser
    Tommy, the enthusiastic eater
    Lorenzo, the outgoing reader

    The Hell’s Kitchen youth
Had trouble with a hot dog booth
It is never what they meant,
But to reform school they were sent

A nightmare they never dreamed of
A prison that gave them no love
By the guards they were abused,
Leaving the four scarred and bruised

    Life never stopped moving forward
Yet it was preposterous to smile, forgive, forget and move onward
Lo and behold the boys retaliated
Against the guards they bitterly hated

A long trial that revealed the guards’ past
Allowed the boys to gain some closure at last
If you read this book, trust us,
    You’ll learn about justice
And you’ll find that what goes around, comes around

  6. Life of Pi by Yann Martel

Pi was stranded out on sea,
    But alone he wouldn’t be,
For an animal he would meet,
An animal much bigger than he,
Fiercely striped and a coat so clean,
A tiger approached and Pi wished he could flee.
But we’d feel the same way, now wouldn’t we?

    To him everything was unknown,
He wished he was simply alone,
Or with a dog so he could throw it a bone,
Rocking on his little life raft all alone,
He started to worry and let out a groan,
Looked like he was in the danger zone,
Too bad there wasn’t such a thing as a phone.

    Richard Parker was the name,
    Of the tiger we acclaim,
    Many challenges he overcame,
Pi’s closest friend he soon became,
Their time together was a long waiting game,
But they worked together all the same,
His realness is uncertain I must disclaim.

    An island green and vast,
He stumbled upon land at last,
    Many meerkats the tiger snatched,
And just like that time flashed past,
But very soon they had to dash,
For in the trees teeth were stashed.
Human teeth if you have to ask.

    They all wanted to know,
    The story of Pi’s woes,
    Their faces were aglow,
But when he told them though,
They did not believe him so,
A tiger? An island? He must be lying, no?
But for Pi it was real not faux.

  7. City of Thieves
    by David Benioff

    Lev is anxious and weak
    Surviving at seventeen
Jewish blood, like his family before
Mom and Big ‘Sis fled, his dad not to be seen
    Kolya is crafty and handsome
    Wooing women; how obscene
A daring soldier, who’s quite constipated
And treats writing like it’s protein
Both are criminals; spared but with a task
Fetch a dozen eggs, or meet the Soviet machine
    And so they embarked unclean

    Sweep the markets of Leningrad
Nothing but booze, cannibals, and fight
    All the while becoming friends
    Lev was teased alright
    They need shelter; Lev’s apartment?
But an old friend offered to let them stay the night
They found out; a rooftop man with chickens? Oh, did it seem bright!
    But the captured bird
Was a rooster; a hard smite
The journey was to resume at first light

    Following the train tracks,
    the snow was hard packed.
    Desires for food arose,
dreams of warmth and safety had stacked.
    The cold was bitter,
    but motivation was never lacked.
The girls gave them a bite to eat and a place to sleep,
most certainly a kind yet rare act,
But were found by the German’s,
though they had yet to be attacked.
Lev and Kolya were unsure of what to do,
so they opened the door and saw the Germans had been tracked!
A smile on Koyla’s face had cracked.

They took off with the Partisans,
    to continue on their quest,
    But soon found imprisonment,
that would end with a game of chess.
Lev won and his opponent was bewildered,
it conjured up a fight that left a bloody mess.

    And now Kolya was gone,
the eggs are collected, and there was less stress,
Lev had to learn and act on.
colonel was happy, and has four dozen, and no reason to obsess,
Him and his daughter now had a wedding to put on.
learning, growing, changing, and a wedding dress,
Made Lev the one that was called upon.

    A truly insightful read,
war teaches, makes difficult and changes people,
    Throughout wondering about creed,
Trust, hope, and coping are taught,
City of Thieves is an excellent book if you need a good read!
